St Helen's Church, in Doncaster, South Yorkshire

ST HELEN'S CHURCH

The tiny hamlet of Marr, is little changed since it was featured in the Domesday survey of 1086. Indeed it formed a Roman outpost on a road they built, with 70 Roman coins found near here.

This beautiful village church features original herringbone masonry, with the nave and chancel considered to be early Norman. The attractive short spire tower is thought to date from around 1300 while the stone-ribbed porch is 15th century.

There are a few other interesting items to see including the early 14th century font, a Royal Coat of Arms, two medieval piscinas and the pulpit with its fine medieval woodwork. There are also traces of medieval red wall painting on the south arcade arches and round one of the windows.

A controversy surrounds two ornate initials carved on the pulpit (C.B.), which are widely regarded to be those of Queen Elizabeth I's Printer; Christopher Barker. He was famous for printing the first copies of the Geneva Bible in England, and other significant and pioneering versions of the influential religious tome. However architectural writer Nikolas Pevsner disagrees.
