Freddie Trueman's Birthplace, in Doncaster, South Yorkshire

FREDDIE TRUEMAN'S BIRTHPLACE

This is where cricketing legend Freddie Trueman was born. True, there's nothing there today because the row of houses have since been razed and nature has removed the evidence.

Scotch Spring Villa's were colliery-owned terraced houses, and the Trueman's lived at Number 5. They were right next to the colliery.

He popped out in 1931, the middle of 7 children, to Alan and Ethel Trueman. He was delivered by his grandmother Mrs Stimpson, and his middle name reflects her maiden name Sewards.

Trueman's education began at the village school in Stainton where his teachers recognised his talent for cricket. His father was captain of the Stainton Crciket club and young Freddie used to accompany him to matches, once reputedly playing for them when he was just eight years old!

Fred described in his autobiography how he as a youngster was able to roam around the countryside here with family and friends.

They moved from here when Fred was 12 to a larger house near Maltby.
