The Eagle and Child, in Doncaster, South Yorkshire

THE EAGLE AND CHILD

A truly historic pub - the first record of these licensed premises shows that an inn has existed on this site since 1492, with the present property dating back to 1820.

The name comes from a wealthy chap's fathering of an illegitimate child, him leaving it for adoption under a tree with a bird's nest in it. It used to be known as the bird and bastard until the current name was deemed more suitable for modern times.

It officially celebrates a birthday on the 23rd April when the reputed birth of the illegitimate child took place.
