Fred Green was a well-known butcher from Mexborough, and alogn with his wife Ann, left an amazing legacy to the hospitals he had supported during his lifetime - over £11 million.

Born in 1902 in Mexborough, he took over the family's pork butcher's business and shop on Hope Street. It had been founded by his father in 1899, who retired in 1930.

The business expanded fast under his guidance, primarily by supplying other retailers, with a reputation for fine pork pie's, and in 1958 it was sold to Associated Dairies and Farm Stores, now known as ASDA.

Fred Green was a board member of Associated Dairies until he retired.

His wife Ann died in 1980 and Fred remained a generous man supporting local charities. In 1989, he gave £150,000 to help equip the new Children's Hospital on the Doncaster Royal Infirmary site.

He died in 1998 and had stipulated his and his wife's joint will to leave their considerable fortune to Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Montagu Hospital.

They fund set up manage their legacy has been involved in many improvements to the local area including setting up the free shuttle bus, ferrying patients between Mexborough Montagu and Doncaster Royal Infirmary up to 20 times every day. Another example is the Clinical Simulation Centre at Montagu, completed in 2003.

A memorial garden to the Greens, with a timeline, has been created opposite the Montagu Hospital almost next to the house where they lived.

Despite their wealth, they suffered tragedy - Fred's younger brother, Harry, died in a motorbike accident in 1924. Then in 1942 his only child, Alan, died on New Year's Eve when his bicycle was hit by a bus.
