Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrian: Rachael Wooding

Rachael Wooding is a Harlington-born musical theatre performer, best known for her performances in the West End hit show We Will Rock You, playing Meat and understudying Jenna Lee-James as Scaramouche.

The 5foot4 mezzo-soprano began her career in Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals touring Germany - such as Cats and Starlight Express. On her return to England and the West End she starred in Saturday Night Fever and Fame.

Then she played Amber in the original London cast of Hairspray the Musical before leaving in leaving in October 2008 to star in Andrew Lloyd Webber's title role of Evita the Musical on it's UK tour run by Bill Kenwright.

Since Spring 2011 she has been featuring as Mary Delgado in the West End production of Jersey Boys.

She said in 2009 to Nottingham press: "I love where I'm from and I stand for good northern values and I've still got my accent but I just couldn't do what I needed to do in Doncaster. Some people are born somewhere and need to get out to fulfil their dreams."

At 16, she left school and headed off to study at the Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts in London.

"That's what I always wanted to do. It never felt like it was a million miles away. I absolutely love going home but I could never have stayed there to do what I do."
