Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrian: Tony Christie
Tony Christie was born Anthony Fitzgerald on Easter Sunday April 25th 1943 in Conisbrough South Yorkshire.He attended Balby Street Junior and Northcliffe Schools leaving when he was 15 to study accountancy.
Tony, has been a British pop star of international reputation for over 30 years. The songs Amarillo, Las Vegas, I did what I did for Maria, Dont go down to Reno,Sweet September, Solitaire and many more are his greatest hits that inspired audiences world-wide with his CDs and records, his acclaimed concert tours and shows.
His albums were on top in the hit-parades and achieved gold and platinum awards.
In 2005 he had a massive hit with the re-released Is This The Way to Amarillo? with Phoenix Nights comedian Peter Kay.
