Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrian: Bruce Woodcock

Bruce Woodcock of Donny
Bruce Woodcock, European, British & British Empire Champion 1945-50, was born in 1920 in Doncaster. In a thirty-nine fight career the former railwayman (Bruce worked in the Plant works) lost just four times and in the immediate post-war years was one of the pre-eminent fighters in Europe. Bruce retired from boxing and moved into the licensed trade, remembered along with his wife Norah, by many old regulars from the Tumbler, in Edlington.Bruce on his wedding day

Record: 35 Wins (31 inside schedule); 4 Defeats.

Profile: Despite having a relatively short career, Woodcock crammed a lot of fights in against good opposition en route to British, British Empire and European Heavyweight crowns. He also fought Lee Savold for the World Heavyweight title (as recognised in Europe). A big puncher who was 200lb plus when in his pomp.

Best Victories: Jack London (KO in 6), Freddie Mills (W12 & KO in 14), Gus Lesnevich (KO in 8), Lee Oma (KO in 4), Lee Savold (WDQ 4).

Notable Defeats: Tami Mauriello (KO by 5), Lee Savold (KO by 4) & Jack Gardner (KO by 11).
