Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrian: Barbara Euphan Todd
Barbara Euphan Todd (1890–1976) was an English writer most notable for her children's books about a scarecrow called Worzel Gummidge that became a TV sensation in the 1970's.
She was born here in Arksey, just North of Doncaster, the only child of Anglican vicar Thomas Todd (parish priest at All Saint's Church) and Alice Maud Mary (née Bentham). They moved South to the rural village of Soberton in Hampshire and looks like they partially remained based here in Doncaster until 1921 at least.
She married in 1932 but her husband was an officer in the Royal Navy and he died in action in 1940 during World War II.
Worzel Gummidge (also called The Scarecrow of Scatterbrook), would become her best known-work, first appearing in 1936. It's a children's story about a scarecrow that comes to life. She would later write nine more books featuring the character.
