Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrian: Jack Pye

John 'Jack' Pye was one of many Lancashire miners who settled in Stainforth in 1924.

Jack was a particularly skilled exponent of the art of catch wrestling, attaining the title of British Amateur Champion whilst still a coal miner and under the age of 21.

Harry became a boxer, Tommy became British light-heavyweight wrestling champion and Frank "Bully Pye" became British lightweight champion.

The Press called him The Doncaster Panther while fans called him Dirty Jack Pye because of his underhand tactics such as gouging and grabbing a metal bucket in the corners, he would then jam it over his opponent's head and bash it until it was so buckled that his rival couldn't remove it.

Jack went on to star in some films with Diana Dors and George Formby, and passed away in 1985 in Blackpool. Jack had 6 brothers.

In 1938 he grappled with European Champion Herbert Audersch at The Ring in Blackfriars in London, and was billed as 'The Doncaster Gunman - Fears No One'.

He retired aged 59 because of a kidney ailment, and spent more time running his night club in Blackpool.
